How it started

In 2005 after returning from honeymoon, Kim and Robin bought a piece of land in the Ezulwini valley after years of searching for the right place. Although it was infested with rubbish, weeds and broken down shacks, they saw the potential for a centrally located lodge with beautiful natural gardens on the slopes of Sheba’s breast mountain. The first challenge was turning a run-down shack into a spacious, comfortable lodge with airy views and some Swazi style. After 6 months of building the main lodge was ready for occupation. Then came the gardens – a seemingly never ending task of clearing rubbish and Lantana, planting grass and indigenous plants, laying walkways and braai areas and accentuating the big boulders and natural stream. After 2 years of hard work the gardens started turning heads and people who knew the place before were amazed at the transformation. Since then, Lidwala Lodge has gone from strength to strength and in 2009 it was awarded the “best Hostel in Swaziland”.

Lidwala Lodge has seen impressive growth over the years, now sleeping up to 45 people and with an all Swazi staff of 10 committed people. The lodge is constantly improving with the latest development being a new reception and booking office with some additional en-suite private rooms, swimming pool and jacuzzi. The staff are also constantly improving the services offered and it is the place to stay if you’re looking to share in Swaziland’s warm hospitality and cultural, wildlife and adventure experiences.

Awarded as “best backpacker lodge in Swaziland 2014” by Hostel World and recently awarded the 2014 Certificate of Excellence by TripAdvisor, Lidwala Backpacker Lodge is a convenient safe-haven for backpackers, volunteers, youth groups, and independent travellers.

With its beautiful location, nestled at the base of Sheba’s Breast mountain with a view over the Ezulwini Valley and Mdzimba Hills and situated among large boulders, indigenous trees and a flowing stream, Lidwala offers a degree of exclusivity at budget rates.

The lodge is conveniently located on the main Ezulwini road, opposite the entrance to The Woodlands. It’s within walking distance to most of Ezulwini’s main facilities and attractions (craft markets, the Gables shopping centre, hotels and restaurants). A shuttle service is available from the lodge on arrangement and there is secure safe parking available for our driving guests.

The lodge has a combination of dorms, en-suite private rooms, safari tents and campsites. Dorms are available for R150 ppn, en-suite dorms R180.00 ppn, en-suite double/twin,family suite available at R590.00 per room per night. Enjoy more privacy and the beautiful views of Sheba’s breasts and the garden.

There is a newly built swimming pool and we have a DSTV lounge with board games and a book exchange. There is also a large deck where you’ll find people enjoying themselves, drinking, playing games or just relaxing and meeting others. There is a braii (barbeque) and campfire area. We offer home cooked meals and on Wednesdays we offer Swazi traditional food with great vegetarian options. We often have a local band coming to perform. Whether relaxing with a book on a rocking chair or exploring the expansive grounds-Lidwala is a beautiful base in Swaziland’s “Valley of Heaven”.

Visit the craft market down the road, hike up Sheba’s Breast Mountain and enjoy panoramic views of the area or explore the real Swaziland by quad bike. If adventure is your calling we can help you arrange white water rafting, adventure caving, horse riding and more. You can also get involved in some of the conservation and community projects run by All Out Africa from this base and are likely to bump into some of the international volunteers staying here.
